Christmas Note #10

Christmas Note #10: If you’re easily offended, you might want to avert your eyes from this photo of my candidate for the worst Santa ever.

From http://www.ebaumsworld.com/pictures/view/80429157/ — a site that appears to be dedicated to humor on the level of a junior high boy.

On a more pleasant note, Ellen Degeneres has a gallery of really cute pictures of “bad” Santa pictures (as opposed to “Bad Santa” pictures). If you have children, it may bring back memories.

Find them here: http://photos.ellen.warnerbros.com/galleries/bad_santa_photos#243

Trust me, they’ll make you feel better.

Christmas Note #9

Christmas Note #9: From one of my favorite Christmas movies, “Love Actually.”

Karen: “So what’s this big news, then?”
Daisy: [excited] “We’ve been given our parts in the nativity play. And I’m the lobster.”
Karen: “The lobster?”
Daisy: “Yeah!”
Karen: “In the nativity play?”
Daisy: [beaming] “Yeah, *first* lobster.”
Karen: “There was more than one lobster present at the birth of Jesus?”
Daisy: “Duh.”

If you’ve not seen it, do yourself a favor and check it out. View the trailer here: http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi362021145/%20

Christmas Note #8

Christmas Note #8: Here’s #8, classic Springsteen singing “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” Unfortunately, couldn’t find the original where he asks the audience if they’ve been good, then responds, “Ah, that’s not many, not many. You guys are in trouble.” Too bad. That always makes me smile, but I hope the song will do the same for you on this bitterly cold morning. You gotta love that red Santa cowboy hat.

Christmas Note #7

Christmas Note #7: Was in honor of the snowstorm that was bearing down on us. For those of you who aren’t children’s librarians, here’s “Snowflake Bentley.” Mostly self-educated, he was the first person to photograph snowflakes. http://bentley.sciencebuff.org/

Check out his photos!

Christmas Note #6

Christmas Note #6 — A call from Santa. You can send one too at http://www.sendacallfromsanta.com/

They’re really funny. You can call people “hipster” and promise them things like peace and quiet or a hot date! They can be sent via phone, email, or FB/Twitter.

Here’s mine: http://sendacallfromsanta.com/?k=af90abf127e08c8581273b983a6202a9

Of course, there’s a mini Google commercial at the end.

The coolest site for e-cards: HipsterCards.com.

www.hipstercards.com

Features cards like this hip kitty. Warning: Some graphics and sentiments are slightly risque.

Christmas Note #4

Christmas Note #4: The best Christmas song ever (complete opposite of the “Fairy Tale of New York” which runs a close second!) and possibly the most unlikely duet. Bing Crosby died about a month after this was recorded.  David Bowie later said he only appeared on the television special because he knew his mother liked Crosby.

Here’s a YouTube version just for the audio, in case you’ve never heard it.

Christmas Note #3

Saw this on a plaque somewhere.

“Three wise women would have asked directions, arrived on time, helped deliver the baby, brought practical gifts, cleaned the stable, made a casserole, and there would have been peace on earth.”

Christmas Note #2

For those who are suffering from the overabundance of sickly sweet holiday music, and with apologies for the use of the f-word, name that song!

“You’re a bum. You’re a punk. You’re an old slut on junk. Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed. You scumbag, you maggot. You cheap lousy faggot, Happy Christmas, your arse, I pray God it’s our last….”

Don’t know? It’s “Fairy Tale of New York” with The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl.

Here’s the video. Shane even has his teeth in, although a friend pointed out that they’re lip-syncing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o89yo5UmGD4&feature=related

On a sadder note, Kirsty was killed by a speedboat while diving Cozumel in 2000. The boat was speeding through waters that were off-limits to that type of powerboat and there are grave doubts as to whether justice was ever served to the one responsible for her death.

Although completely unorthodox, this is one of my favorite Christmas songs.
