“Judge Not….” Part 2

Rave — Reading and Writing

You may remember a post I wrote a few months ago called “Judge Not….” — all about my philosophy on judging writing contests.

Well, guess what! Today I got an email today which called the comments of my fellow judges and myself “precise, useful, and encouraging.” I’m taking that not only as a compliment, but also as encouragement to continue to hone my judging skills.

It’s so nice to be appreciated.

For this very reason, despite being rather outspoken when I’m unhappy about something, I strive to be equally vocal when the opposite happens.

How about you? Do you complain? Keep your comments, both good and bad, to yourself? Offer compliments when they’re due? Have you ever been on the receiving end of either? I’d love to hear your thoughts, so please leave a comment and share them.

Pitching a Book in Three Sentences

Writing

I have a new motivational partner —  and personally, I think we all need one of those, whether you’re a writer or not, don’t you? Anyway, because she’s a generous soul, Wendy noticed an opportunity for me to pitch my non-fiction book proposal for Keeping A Breast (or as I frequently refer to it — KAB), and emailed to tell me about it.

It seems on the Savvy Authors website, they frequently host events where writers can pitch to some great editors and agents.

The catch? Most of these events require three line pitches.

Sum up your book in just three sentences? Hey, no pressure or anything *grin*, but it can be done.

In fact, I’ve found the exercise of developing such a pitch to be a great method of distilling what my book is about. And that effort helps keep it clear in my mind as I write as well.

What do you think? Can you do it? These are great opportunities to reach some top-drawer editors and agents that you might otherwise never meet without traveling to a major conference like RT or RWA national.

www.savvyauthors.com if you’re interested. They also offer some excellent online workshops, so check it out.

Try the three line pitch on your work in progress, and if you come up with something that you think works, leave a comment. If you do, I’ll share my three line pitch for KAB as it stands at present.

I’d Rather Wine Than Whine

Winery @ Wolf Creek

A Rave: I love this place. And the fact that chemo starts Friday seemed like a good excuse to picnic here with a bottle of wine and my husband and daughter on Sunday. What do you think? If you’re ever around Akron OH, this is a great place to chill. Lovely views. BYOB(asket, as in picnic basket). They also do cool programs like Vino and Vinyasa (yoga and wine). Bet you’d feel pretty mellow after that!

http://www.wineryatwolfcreek.com/index.php is their website. And, no, they’re not paying me to advertise!
